Course Description

The Pearson BTEC Level ½ FRIRST certificate in hospitality is a flexible course for 16-19 year-old students to study alongside Mathematics and English GCSE. It is for students who want to start a career in the hospitality industry and can be taken as part of a wider study programme.


What does the qualification cover?

The qualification will enable students to develop the skills and behaviours that give them the best opportunity to be successful in applying for work. All the content is mandatory and relates directly to the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected by employers in the hospitality industry. The areas the students will cover include:

  • Working in the hospitality industry

  • Kitchen operation

  • Cooking skills and techniques

  • Running a professional kitchen service


Achieving the qualification will give students an advantage when applying for a job in professional cookery. The types of jobs they will be ready for are:

  • Commis chef

  • Cook

  • Contract caterer

  • Events coordinator

  • Kitchen assistant

  • Junior pastry chef

The qualification gives students a sound basis to progress to a L3 Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma in Hospitality.

Within the qualification there are 4 mandatory units, and a variety of optional units adding up to 120 hours of study that students must complete.


The following two units are assessed externally:

Unit 1 Introducing the Hospitality Industry

Unit 9 How the hospitality industry contributes to healthy eating


The internally assessed units are:

Unit 2 Working in the hospitality industry

Unit 3 Food safety and health and safety in Hospitality

Unit 6 Planning, preparing, cooking and finishing food

Unit 7 Food and beverage service in the Hospitality Industry

Unit 13 Contemporary world food cooking skills


Enrichment Opportunities

All learners will be required to work with employers and this will involve visits to professional kitchens including our academy kitchen. They will also have access to visiting speakers and tutors.
