Course Description
Engineering fitters, construct, assemble and manufacture. The broad purpose of the occupation is to produce complex high value, low volume components, or assemblies in full or part, using machines, equipment, or systems to the required specification. For example, turbines, cranes, gearboxes, production lines, rigs, and platforms. Fitters may typically have a mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, pipe fitting or instrumentation bias or operate across multiple disciplines depending on the assembly.

How will I study?
Year 1 – full time at NWTC or day release basis – I day per week at NWTC
Year 2 – 1 day per week on technical certificate at NWTC, 4 days in your workplace
Year 3 / 4 –1 day a week at NWTC, 4 days in your workplace undertaking assessments
SPECIFIC SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
What will I learn?
-
how to plan component/assembly task – materials, tools and equipment
-
how to prepare the work area for component/assembly tasks; sourcing required resources, tools/equipment
-
planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions
-
tool checking during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects
-
measuring and testing, checking/inspecting component/assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, volt meter

problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate
-
application improvement techniques; recommending/implementing solutions where appropriate
-
component/assembly documentation completion for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation

reporting work outcomes and/or issues

work area housekeeping on completion of the activity

how to dispose of waste in accordance with waste streams

operating in line with quality, health & safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measure where applicable

What qualifications will I achieve?

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) – Awarding organisation EAL; GLH 750, this qualification ensures full knowledge to complete the fitting role.

Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge) – Awarding organisation Pearsons; GLH 720 – this qualification ensures full knowledge to complete the fitting role.

Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) – Awarding organisation City and Guilds; 720 GLH, this qualification ensures full knowledge to complete the fitting role.
